The objective is to increase the capacity of veterinary services on MNs to identify and investigate FMD suspected cases and outbreaks.  

Learning objectives

  • Identify clinical signs of FMD;
  • Estimate the age of FMD lesions;
  • Document clinical findings;
  • Take appropriate samples FMD laboratory diagnosis;
  • Submit FMD suspected samples to the laboratory in a biosecure manner;
  • Interpret laboratory results following submission of suspect FMD samples to the laboratory;
  • Construct an epidemiological timeline for backwards and forwards tracing;
  • Design an FMD investigation using the principles of outbreak investigation;
  • Assess risk factors for FMD spread;
  • Assess farm biosecurity;
  • Demonstrate principles of biosecurity when entering/exiting FMD infected premises;
  • Outline FMD emergency response options available in the scenario provided.
