FMD Emergency Preparation Course Multicountry (FEPC En 13)

Eleven EuFMD Member Nations participated in this online training course (Austria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Sweden and Switzerland).   

The learning objectives are to: 

  • Explain the pathogenesis of FMD;  
  • Describe the clinical signs of FMD in cattle, small ruminants and pigs;  
  • Describe how to age FMD lesions;  
  • Explain how to take correct diagnostic samples to enable laboratory confirmation of an FMD diagnosis;  
  • Explain how to conduct an epidemiological investigation on a premises where FMD is suspected;  
  • Explain how to enter and leave a premises suspected of FMD in a biosecure manner;  
  • Describe key aspects of the control measures which are used in an FMD outbreak in a previously free country.   

The topics covered include: 

  • clinical and laboratory diagnosis of FMD;  
  • lesion ageing;  
  • outbreak investigation and epidemiology; 
  • biosecurity;  
  • overview of control measures for FMD.  

The target audience is veterinarians who will be directly involved in diagnosis or investigating FMD suspicions or outbreaks. The course helps raise awareness of FMD and on the importance of early detection amongst a wider group of practitioners. It is particularly suitable for field level government and private veterinarians.
