This course is for veterinarians or those involved in the livestock industry in Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) free countries who would be involved in the diagnosis and investigation of an outbreak of FMD were it to occur.

After studying this course participants will be able to: 

• explain the pathogenesis of FMD; 
• describe the clinical signs of FMD in cattle, small ruminants and pigs; 
• describe how to age FMD lesions; 
• explain how to take correct diagnostic samples to enable laboratory confirmation of an FMD diagnosis; 
• explain how to conduct an epidemiological investigation on a premises where FMD is suspected; 
• explain how to enter and leave a premises suspected of FMD in a biosecure manner; 
• describe key aspects of the control measures which are used in an FMD outbreak in a previously free country.
