The European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD)

Preparing to use emergency vaccination for FMD in European countries – Third workshop

30/05/2023 -
Online,

Background

In March and June 2022, the EuFMD conducted the first two workshops in this series, to explore how emergency vaccination, along with disease control measures, influenced the progression of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak scenarios modelled in four countries of Europe.

The reports from these workshops are available at the following links:

Workshop 1 (10 March 2022)  -  Workshop 2  (14 June 2022)

The delay in regaining country FMD-free status (and regaining international markets) is a significant barrier to using emergency vaccination as a control measure for Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)

Workshop Content

On 30 May 2023, participants will explore, using case studies, current and alternative post-vaccination surveillance guidelines for countries in which the decision has been made to use emergency vaccination as part of the FMD outbreak response.

Outcomes

An evaluation of the effect of current and alternative post-vaccination surveillance guidelines on the time and costs to recover FMD-free status, using case studies modelled in three countries.

The results of the workshop can contribute further to the consideration of emergency vaccination in contingency planning for FMD in free countries.
