Bee-Friendly Plant Breeding - Proposals to ensure pollinator's food resources in agricultural areas

Proposals to ensure pollinator's nutritional food resources in agricultural areas

Pollinators, particularly bees, are essential constituents of our ecosystem, first of all as bioindicators of environmental health and second as providers of a variety in food production. They contribute to well-balanced diets and human health. In the EU around 80% of food crops, particularly fruits and vegetables, rely on animal pollination (mostly by insects). It is well evidenced that pollinators are facing increasing threats worldwide that threaten their survival. Their protection should be recognised as a priority by environmentalists, public institutions and the general public. The latest report of the IPBES on pollination, pollinators, and food production has recently echoed this fact[1]. Furthermore, beekeepers across Europe have increasingly reported a decline in bee’s attractiveness towards usually melliferous crops. Honey production from usually highly melliferous crops has also decreased, such as for example sunflower. As a result, the crops that were an important food source for pollinators in agricultural areas are losing their potential.
