SEVA in association with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), IFAD assisted Post Tsunami Sustainable Livelihood Project trained women, self-help group members on herbal treatment for animals upto 21 days. Selected women members were trained intensively to work as Community Livestock Volunteers (CLVs). Then they train local village women members. CLVs deliver animal health services to livestock keepers to their doorsteps by providing herbal preparations for different diseases/conditions of animals. CLVs charge service charges for their herbal preparations and for their services rendered to livestock keepers. SEVA trained 150 CLVs, and they are well versed in treatment of all digestive problems (tympany, diarrhoea, anorexia), internal and external parasites, maggot wounds poisonous bite, mastitis, Blue Tongue and Foot and Mouth Disease etc. They also weigh goats which are ready for sale and facilitate selling of animals on weight basis by using weighing machine.

CLVs earn Rs. 2 000 to 3 000 per month by preparing herbal masala bolus, mathan thailam, herbal dewormer, etc. and administered to 800 to 1 100 animals. Livestock keepers demand their regular visits because they experienced the positive outcome through administration of herbal preparations, and it is much cheaper than allopathic treatment for animals.
