Small-scale fishers and fish workers face increasingly high levels of social-ecological risk, particularly in the global South, and yet they tend to lack access to effective social protection.

This infographic is part of work by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) to focus global attention on the importance of and role played by small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers.  It shows how aligning social protection and active labour market programmes with fisheries management could enable and incentivise more sustainable livelihood practices, while providing a means to manage risk. 

Better integration of these policies and programmes requires institutional cooperation and coordination, more effective and equitable fisheries management, adequate and sustainable financing, and adaptation of social protection and labour programme design and implementation.
