How to light and use a smoker for beekeeping

The use of fire and smoke to extract honey from hives or natural colonies offers some kind of protection from the beestings. However, this practice does not only harm the environment and the health of the colonies, it has also a negative impact on the honey quality. The use of a metal smoker with bellows solves this problem. What follows is a description of how to light the smokers and how to use it during a hive inspection. Indications on the combustion material to use are also given.
