How can Tanzania build capacity to accelerate women’s economic empowerment?

Achieving gender equality in Tanzania requires equal legal rights for all. The World Bank's Women, Business, and the Law team recently reviewed Tanzania's progress and future needs. Tanzania has enacted laws against sexual harassment and gender discrimination and provided maternity and paternity benefits. However, gaps remain, such as restrictive nationality laws for women, insufficient maternity leave, and limited workplace flexibility. Women also face barriers in entrepreneurship due to discriminatory inheritance laws and lack of access to finance. Safety frameworks are weak, with no domestic violence laws and prevalent child marriage. Strengthening childcare services and comprehensive legal reforms, including pay transparency and specialized family courts, are essential. The National Gender Policy and National Plan of Action call for amending biased laws. Raising awareness and changing gender norms are crucial. The World Bank supports Tanzania's efforts to achieve gender equality.
