Seeds of Sovereignty: Contesting the Politics of Food

We all need to eat to live, but the issue of a regular supply of affordable, quality food is often absent from policy debates. Food seems secondary to the major political issues of the day. Yet in the face of ecological collapse, nuclear threat and global economic disintegration, this dossier, produced by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and Alameda, highlights the strategic importance of food production and distribution in tackling the global polycrisis.

To address this as a strategic problem, the authors focus on the interrelated questions of how to organise, how to sustain organisation and how to build alternatives that practically transform food systems. At the heart of the dossier is the argument that this can only be done by shifting the way we think about the food crisis from the concept of food security, based on the question of food availability, which effectively normalises the crisis, to the concept of food sovereignty.

This dossier brings together leading experts and thinkers on the food crisis such as Jennifer Clapp and Raj Patel, in dialogue with practitioners and activists such as Million Belay of AFSA.
