Bunt treatment methods (Tilletia caries)

Problem

Common bunt (Tilletia caries) is a seed borne pathogen of wheat that causes damage even at low thresholds of infection. However, correct seed management can help organic farmers prevent or at least minimise infection.

Solution

A demonstration of post-harvest treatments that can remove spores.

Description

In this video, plant breeder and common bunt researcher Anders Borgen from Agrologica (DK) addresses effective methods of seed cleaning and seed treatment to minimise the spread of common bunt spores, which is useful for organic farmers.
He demonstrates the use of a seed brush to clean seeds with a machine he has modified himself for increased effectiveness. He also shows how to use vinegar as seed treatment within a mixer.
