Empowering vulnerable youth

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with funding from Denmark, are supporting 24 Junior Farmer Field Schools (JFFS) with over 170 learners in South Sudan. These schools encompass a simple methodology for teaching vulnerable children, including former child soldiers, about farming and entrepreneurial skills. In 2018, over 800 children were released by armed groups and reunited with their families. Once at home they needed to be assisted with re-establishing their livelihoods to improve household income and food security. Through the learning sessions in the JFFS children are encouraged to embrace what they learned and apply to their own crops. These schools follow a “living classroom” approach in which students participate in field activities including crop selection and cultivation, land preparation, pest management and more which are integrated with the learning of social skills to increase participation and trust.
