Boosting Africa’s soils

From the Abuja Declaration on fertilizers to a sustainable soil management framework for food and nutrition security in Africa by 2030

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Global Soil  Partnership (GSP) have jointly released ‘Boosting Africa’s soils: From the Abuja Declaration on Fertilizers to a sustainable soil management framework for food and nutrition security in Africa by 2030’, a booklet published on the occasion of the 29th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa (4-8 April 2016, Abidjan). In the margin of the bi-annual FAO Conference of Ministers of Agriculture, FAO and the African Union Commission held a side-event themed ‘Follow-up to the Abuja 2006 Declaration on Fertilizers of an African Green Revolution’. The booklet builds on the global commitments made during the International Year of Soils in 2015. It is an appeal to African countries to adopt Integrated Soil Fertility Management and Sustainable Soil Management which are crucial to food and nutrition security and sustainable agricultural productivity in Africa. Based on current understanding of soil functions, as well as a more integrated approach to natural resources management , there is need to widen the scope of the Abuja Declaration perspective. This will be instrumental in taking better consideration of the approaches and needs of African farmers under the umbrella of the Sustainable Development Goals.
