The Philippines / Social Development: A Roadmap for Recovery
The reforms needed by small-scale fishers in the Philippines pivot around the role of the municipal administration in handling fisheries development and the welfare of fisherfolk. Fishing in the Philippines is crucially dependent on small-scale fisheries as a sector that is anchored in local communities that have historic links to adjacent fishery resources, traditions and values. Fishing includes activities that range from capture fishing and processing to vending and mending nets, among others. The actors are fishers in municipal and inland capture fishing, fishworkers in both aquaculture production and as crew in commercial fishing vessels, and also women in fish processing.
