Cotton cultivation with laser levelling, ridge sowing, integrated pest management and compost application in dry spell conditions

This technology describes the introduction of laser levelling, ridge sowing, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and compost application in cotton cultivation in the Ghotki district in Pakistan. Pakistan experiences several floods and droughts, worsened by climate change which is characterised by changes in the monsoon patterns and extreme temperatures. However, the main hazards affecting the agricultural livelihoods and the cotton cultivation in the Ghotki district, are dry spells and related water scarcity. Growing cotton on ridges along with the use of IPM techniques is a practice that farmers can use to reduce their irrigation water consumption in cotton fields without decreasing its yield. This practice also allows to decrease the use of chemical pesticides used to control the harmful pests. Land was levelled using a laser land leveller to ensure equal distribution of the water in the field. Compost was applied during land preparation, which helped to increase the water holding capacity of the soil. The use of IPM techniques also had positive effect on the environment through reduced use of chemical pesticides. The practices described here are called Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) practices. These are aimed at preventing new and reducing existing disaster risks and managing residual risks, all of which contribute to strengthening resilience and achieving sustainable development. The implementation of these DRR practices enables farmers to obtain higher yields, higher water management efficiency and to adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
