Forage management: box baling
The availability of feed resources is, in many areas, a major limiting factor to smallholder milk production. Storage and transport of conserved fodder is an integral component of solutions to this constraint. Using farmer-evaluated strategies, a low-cost, practical and economical method for transporting animal feed material was developed. The technique, "box-baling", reduces transportation costs and also increases the potential for on-farm storage of fodder. This is an example of how to increase the profitability of small-producers from cows and goats milk through improved utilisation of cultivated forages, crop residues and roadside grasses.
