Opinion: 5 demands for more climate-resilient food systems in 2023

The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), a group made up of over 200 million farmers, pastoralists, fisherfolk, Indigenous peoples, and women's and youth movements, is calling for a wide-scale shift to agroecology in order to build a resilient food system on the continent. AFSA's Program Coordinator, Bridget Mugambe, in her article for Devex, has outlined five actions that are necessary for returning power to African smallholders and away from "big business, billionaire philanthropists, and multinational corporations backed by influential leaders." These actions include a shift away from the Green Revolution model, the development of an "Africa food policy" that guarantees food sovereignty, and investment in food systems that are more resilient to emergencies caused by climate change. Bridget emphasizes that in order to survive in a world of increasing crises, the continent needs to shift its approach to food production and invest in systems that are more resilient to emergencies.
