More than half of all mangrove ecosystems at risk of collapse by 2050, first global assessment finds

For the first time, a global assessment using the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems has evaluated the health of mangrove ecosystems worldwide, revealing that 50% are at risk of collapse, with nearly 20% classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered. Threats such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change, including sea-level rise and increased severe storms, significantly endanger these vital habitats. Released on International Day for Biodiversity, the study underscores the necessity for coordinated conservation efforts. Led by IUCN and involving over 250 experts from 44 countries, the assessment highlights the crucial role of mangroves in disaster risk reduction, carbon sequestration, and fisheries support, emphasizing their preservation and restoration as essential to combating climate change and protecting biodiversity.
