Small scale agriculture as a resilient system in rural Romania

In Romania, the transition to a market economy meant a change in the relationship between the users of land resources (who became land owners) and the resource (the agricultural land, the operation of which was divided among the new owners). In the last quarter of a century, the rural areas and the small peasant household farm have represented an economic and social ‘safety net’ against the changes and shocks generated through the process of restructuring the socialist economy (Gavrilescu and Florian, 2007; Alexandri and Luca, 2008; Pouliquen, 2011). The small household farms in the rural areas became one of the main modalities to meet the subsistence needs of rural household members whose consumption of self-produced food helps them to survive and combat poverty.
