Participatory breeding of superior, mosaic disease-resistant cassava
The project has validated a participatory breeding approach for developing superior, mosaic disease-resistant cassava, demonstrating that it can provide a means by which farmers, plant breeders and plant pathologists could work together in an effective and inclusive manner. It also provided an environment whereby farmers made a significant and consistent contribution to the outcome of the selection. Following multi-locational trials with 35 clones, three "front runners" have been identified and inspection plots have been prepared by the National Varietal Release Committee, both for inspection and as future sources of planting material in anticipation of the release.
