Whose seeds are they anyway? Peasants’ call for common ownership

Peasant rights movements fear that intellectual property rights regimes are spreading across the developing world, posing a danger to their traditional seed saving and exchange practices. This is an excellent piece that explains why restrictive seed laws exclude peasant farmers, who are critical to feeding the world and establishing climate-friendly agricultural systems. “Today, countries are increasingly following an intellectual property rights approach,” Traoré, who is a member of La Via Campesina, told Geneva Solutions, “that rights groups say is at odds with peasants' right to seeds, which is recognized by the UN primarily through the UN declaration on the rights of peasants adopted in 1992.”
