Climate change triggers mounting food insecurity, poverty and displacement in Africa

According to a new multi-agency report coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), changing precipitation patterns, rising temperatures, and more extreme weather contributed to rising food insecurity, poverty, and displacement in Africa in 2020, compounding the socioeconomic and health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The State of the Climate in Africa 2020 study offers an overview of climate change trends and impacts, such as sea level rise and the melting of Africa's iconic glaciers. It emphasizes Africa's disproportionate vulnerability and demonstrates how the potential advantages of investments in climate adaptation, weather and climate services, and early warning systems far exceed the costs.
