Tips for harvesting and storage of different crops

This practice shows some simple tips for harvesting and storage of different crops.

The dependence of much food production on climatic fluctuations means that variability in food output can never be completely avoided. Adequate on-farm and household storage are therefore crucial, not only to enable storage of current and surplus food items, but primarily to provide farmers with a food supply beyond the harvest period to ensure year-round availability of needed food for family consumption.

As part of the post-harvest continuum, storage is a link in the production-storage- marketing -consumption chain. It is a means of overcoming what is essentially considered a transport constraint.

All food products have different ways to be handled after harvesting. For example, the drying phase presents a specific problem during the post-harvest handling of cereal and legume grains. For these crops, the drying stage is all-important to reduce attack and damage from insects and fungi that otherwise reduce the quality of cereals and legumes and are dangerous for human health.
