Rice and duck farming as a means for contributing to climate change adaptation and mitigation

The rice duck farming system aims to facilitate environmental adaptation in the cultivation of rice, and to contribute to food and economic security in the region by reducing the use of pesticides, increasing yield and generating an additional income for farmers. Integrating ducks in rice farming have been proven to increase 20 percent higher yield with about 50 percent higher net return. The same cultivation area can be used for not only rice production but also subsidiary products like meat and eggs. At the same time, it reduces labour inputs through the control of weeds and insects by ducks. Besides its economic benefits, this technology is especially environmentally friendly. The application of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides can be reduced thereby improving soil quality and pest control. The additional benefits of this Good Practice Option (GPO) are higher food security to small farming households in times of calamities and on a long-term basis the contribution to reducing methane emission. Hence, the integration of duck in lowland rice production is recommended as a climate adaptation and mitigation option. This technology describes how to implement the rice and duck farming system.
