Elkana – 30 Years of Supporting Organic Production and Agricultural Biodiversity
On the 12th of October, 2024, Biological Farming Association Elkana held an event entitled “Elkana - 30 Years of Supporting Organic Production and Agricultural Biodiversity in Georgia” to mark the 30th anniversary of founding of the Association. The event was orgaised at the Elkana Seed Ark farm, located in the village of Tsnisi, Akhaltsikhe municipality, Samtskhe-Javakheti region, and aimed to summarize the 30-year activities of the Association Elkana as well as to present and encourage the initiatives of local farmers.
The event included presentation of agricultural biodiversity conservation projects supported by bp Georgia and the German organization Brot für die Welt and the closure of the Seed Libraries project funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, implemented together with the Czech organization Seminkovna. Within the framework of the Seed Libraries project, eight new Seed Libraries were presented and awarded at the event, among them, four educational institutions, one public library and three family farms.
Exhibition-sale of farmers’ products was held at the event, as well as the masterclasses of bread baking of endemic species and local varieties of wheat, Tenili cheese making, Meskhetian Kada baking, etc. Guests of the event had an opportunity to participate in the masterclasses and taste traditional local dishes.
The event hosted a wide audience - Elkana member farmers, representatives of the non-governmental and governmental sectors of Georgia, international organizations, scientific and educational institutions, media, HoReCa operators and private sector, from Samtskhe-Javakheti region as well as from Tbilisi and other regions of Georgia.
