An assessment of the impact of climate change on agriculture and food security in the Pacific

A Case Study in the Republic of the Marshall Islands

The development of subsistence agriculture is a key strategy for supporting the growing population of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. However, this approach is likely to be affected by climate change. Other factors, such as urbanization and a shift away from traditional food to imported items, are also having an impact. The atoll geography of RMI and narrow resource base further limits the options available. Population growth is reducing the land available for agriculture and other human activities are affecting the coastal and marine environments. Early action is needed to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change. This will be a long-term effort by RMI and its partners at the community, regional and international level.
