Founded in 1992 in Rayagada, tribal dominated district of Odisha, Shakti Organisation is a not-for-profit registered organization committed to strengthening its interventions to catalyze change and contribute to the development and growth of the vulnerable and marginal communities. Shakti Organisation is focusing on addressing the gaps created through agricultural, educational, health, and socio-economic shortfalls. A group of educated and highly motivated persons endeavouring to address the underlying causes of poverty, poor health care, literacy and livelihood insecurity led the foundation of the organisation. Its interventions aims to improve the well-being of tribal people, improve and diversify the available secure livelihood options, improve water resource management and sanitation, empower women and community organisations, and strengthen the Panchayat Raj Institutions. At Shakti, we achieve sustainable behavioural and societal change through capacity building of communities to take charge of their own lives. We are the first to inaugurate Village Health Committees (VHC) and continue to advance the cause of full and active participation in the areas of governance, health & nutrition, education and livelihood development. We have considerable expertise in the areas of forming and strengthening village committees; training of PRI members, increasing political literacy; establishing SHGs, SHG Federations, training members, developing market linkage schemes, managing micro- finance schemes; women empowerment; creating sustainable livelihood opportunities like leaf plate, stitching, poultry, mushroom cultivation, etc.; surveying, designing and constructing gravity fed water supply systems; advocacy and sensitizing communities on land rights, health, and education. The name Shakti, a Hindi word meaning ‘empowerment’ was chosen deliberately to align with mission and vision of Shakti Organisation. Shakti has taken an integrated and innovative developmental approach to solving the problems of social and economic backwardness. Its work has focused on addressing the problems created through agricultural, educational, health, socio-economic shortfalls by enabling the needy and down trodden utilise available resources. Since its inception, Shakti has touched many frontiers and has evolved itself as a full-fledged development agency both institutionally and programmatically capable of undertaking projects designed: • to improve the well-being of tribal people; • to improve and diversify the available secure livelihood options; • to improve water provision and sanitation; • to empower women and community organisations; • to strengthen the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). Strategic objectives of SHAKTI a) Building Sustainable Livelihoods: SHAKTI’s livelihood strategy focuses on household food and nutrition security and expanding income generating opportunities for rural poor, especially tribals; b) Fostering Inclusive Governance: SHAKTI strives to improve the governance system that truly represents the voice of the poor. The democratic bodies, service delivery institutions are transparent and accountable to their constituencies and at the same time contribute towards building strong access, entitlements and rights of the poor and marginalized communities including women. c) Reducing disaster vulnerability and promoting community adaptation to climate change: SHAKTI further its role as strong regional player in disaster preparedness and enhance its effort towards innovating climate change adaptation practices and research.
