В 1999 году на 23-й сессии Комиссии “Кодекс Алиментариус” был учрежден Региональный координационный комитет по Ближнему Востоку, объединивший страны Ближнего Востока (для ФАО) и Восточного Средиземноморья (для ВОЗ). Первое заседание комитета состоялось в Каире (Египет) в 2001 году.
В настоящее время штаб-квартира регионального координатора по Ближнему Востоку находится в Управлении по надзору за качеством пищевых продуктов и медикаментов Саудовской Аравии в Эр-Рияде.
Цели координатора в отношении Кодекса в регионе включают развитие и усиление деятельности контактных лиц и национальных комитетов Кодекса, налаживание связей членов Координационного комитета по Ближнему Востоку друг с другом, с другими регионами и с Секретариатом Кодекса, а также координацию их работы.
Еще одной целью является организация обмена научными и техническими знаниями между более и менее опытными странами региона.
Координатор активно поддерживает использование стандартов Кодекса в качестве основы для национальных законодательных и нормативных актов и планирует продолжать работу по разработке и пересмотру стандартов Кодекса с учетом региональных интересов.

The eleventh session of the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for Near East (CCNE) commenced today, marking an important milestone in regional collaboration on food safety and quality standards. The Qatar General Authority for Standardization and Metrology held World Food Safety Day events on 7 and 8 June under the theme “Food standards save lives”. Celebrations took place in collaboration with the Municipality, Qatar University, and Monoprix supermarkets and included a popup stall showcasing awareness videos and emphasizing the importance of food safety to consumers and children.
