В 1999 году на 23-й сессии Комиссии “Кодекс Алиментариус” был учрежден Региональный координационный комитет по Ближнему Востоку, объединивший страны Ближнего Востока (для ФАО) и Восточного Средиземноморья (для ВОЗ). Первое заседание комитета состоялось в Каире (Египет) в 2001 году.
В настоящее время штаб-квартира регионального координатора по Ближнему Востоку находится в Управлении по надзору за качеством пищевых продуктов и медикаментов Саудовской Аравии в Эр-Рияде.
Цели координатора в отношении Кодекса в регионе включают развитие и усиление деятельности контактных лиц и национальных комитетов Кодекса, налаживание связей членов Координационного комитета по Ближнему Востоку друг с другом, с другими регионами и с Секретариатом Кодекса, а также координацию их работы.
Еще одной целью является организация обмена научными и техническими знаниями между более и менее опытными странами региона.
Координатор активно поддерживает использование стандартов Кодекса в качестве основы для национальных законодательных и нормативных актов и планирует продолжать работу по разработке и пересмотру стандартов Кодекса с учетом региональных интересов.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS), held a workshop on Codex on 16 December 2019 in Aswan Governorate, Egypt. Thirty-eight participants from Yemen, Sudan and Egypt are currently meeting in Cairo for a three-day workshop on Codex Alimentarius and its procedures.
