As a prelude to the commemoration of World Food Safety Day 2024, thirty people, including representatives of administrative sectors, Civil Society Organizations, technical and financial partners and academics, were briefed on the organization, institutional structure, functioning, roles and responsibilities and communication between actors of the FAO/WHO International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN). The aim of this training was to increase the involvement and participation of these stakeholders in food safety activities with a view to a better response to the detection and response to food safety incidents.

Thanks to the technical support and facilitation of international experts from WHO, FAO and the INFOSAN Secretariat, national actors have:

(i)              identified opportunities and means to strengthen intersectoral collaboration, partnership and sharing of food safety information, including during emergencies;

(ii)            acquired knowledge on what INFOSAN is, its operation during an international food safety emergency taking into account the International Health Regulations of 2005;

(iii)           discussed and clarified the roles of the INFOSAN Emergency Contact Point (ECP) and the INFOSAN Focal Points of the sectors and other relevant authorities.

Also, this training made it possible to launch the foundations of the INFOSAN/Niger network and to develop a roadmap whose implementation will allow the country to move from level 1 to level 3 or 4 of the scale defined by the INFOSAN secretariat.

This two-day activity (29–30 May), structured around plenary presentations, group work and tabletop simulation exercises, was supported by WHO and organized in collaboration with the Directorate of Nutrition from the Ministry of Public Health, Population and Social Affairs of Niger, the INFOSAN Secretariat and FAO.
