CCFFV23 / Committee agrees on fresh dates as other produces also make progress
The 23rd session of the Codex Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CCFFV) has concluded in Mexico City, with the much-anticipated proposed standard for fresh dates finally agreed after ten years of discussion. The proposed text will be forwarded to the next Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) meeting for adoption.
Chairperson, Andrea Genoveva Solano Rendon, hailed the successes of the week-long meeting: “We have had the opportunity of debating, of discussing and progressing standards that will rule the trade of one of the most important sources of nourishment for mankind: fresh fruits and vegetables,” she said. Referring to the new standard for fresh dates, she said “Fresh dates are an invaluable source of natural energy that has a great relevance, not only in the regions where it is cultivated, but also in the international marketplace. Fresh dates are an example of how a traditional produce can transcend borders and become an essential element in everybody’s diet across the world.”.
She took the opportunity of her closing speech to outline the other successes of the week, which include agreement to forward the proposed draft standard for fresh curry leaves to CAC, noting that “its demand is increasing globally – this is another example, how beyond common fresh fruits and vegetables, there are products such as curry leaves that are becoming more important.”
The CCFFV meeting also discussed the possible need to review CCFFV standards to ensure they align with the CCFFV standard layout. Under consideration were the Standard for Avocado (CXS 197-1995) and the Standard for Asparagus (CXS 225-2001). The Committee agreed to continue work on the alignment of existing standards through an electronic working group chaired by Germany.
In terms of new work proposals, the Committee agree to forward to CAC two proposals: one on fresh turmeric and the other on fresh broccoli.
“It is fundamental that we continue working together to guarantee that these fruits and vegetables can be enjoyed by everybody without putting at risk the health of consumers, or the wellbeing of the producers. I am convinced that the work carried out here not only will strengthen the trust in international trade regarding these products, but also, will contribute to food safety across the whole world, improving the quality and access to fresh fruits for the coming generations.”
“I am grateful for the outstanding leadership of our Madam Chairperson, as well as the dedication and support of the Mexico Secretariat, which has been instrumental to the success of this session,” said Lingping Zhang, Food Standards Officer, Codex Alimentarius Secretariat. “We acknowledge with particular satisfaction the significant progress made, particularly the completion of the standard for fresh dates, an achievement that marks a major milestone after a decade of hard work. The contribution of all electronic working group chairs and the collaborative efforts of all participants has been essential to this progress, demonstrating the shared commitment to food safety and quality of Codex Members.”
