CCFFP36/ Sardinella lemuru makes it through to CAC47

18/10/2024

The 36th session of the Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery Products has concluded, having worked over a 5-day period 7–11 October, by correspondence, with virtual report adoption on 17 October.

The key agenda item under discussion related to the work on a proposed amendment of the Standard for Canned Sardines and Sardine-Type Products (CXS 94-1981), which would see the inclusion in the Standard’s list of species of Sardinella lemuru (Bali Sardinella). The Committee discussed the results of sensory tests that would help them determine the suitability of this addition to the list of sardine species and concluded that S. lemuru satisfied the criteria for inclusion in the list of sardines and has forwarded the proposed amendment to CAC47.

The Committee also discussed and agreed upon proposed consequential amendments to the fish and fisheries standards regarding labelling provisions for non-retail containers and on the intended use of the provision for amino acid nitrogen in the Standard for Fish Sauce (CXS 302-2011).

CCFFP Chairperson Vigdis Synnøve Veum commended the work of the delegates attending the meeting and thanked them for their active participation throughout the entire period. Senior Food Standards Officer for the Codex Secretariat, Hilde Kruse, said of the meeting: “CCFFP36 was conducted smoothly and efficiently and concluded consensually thanks to the excellent and thorough work done by the EWG, and great leadership by the EWG chairs and the CCFFP Chairperson.” Riri Kihara, Junior Professional Officer in the Codex Secretariat, also commented: “Thanks to the excellent leadership of chairpersons and the great contributions of all Members, CCFFP36 has achieved the initial objective of its reactivation!”
