19/06/2024

Timor-Leste has been implementing a Codex Trust Fund project under the guidance of WHO since 2022. An advocacy workshop on Codex was organized 12–14 June in Dili as a part of World Food Safety Day celebrations. There were 46 participants representing the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Coordinating Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Public Works, private sector representatives and United Nations agencies. The World Food Safety Day message was delivered by the Vice Prime Minister, highlighting that food safety as a shared responsibility and Timor-Leste will have to do more in the light of Codex and World Trade Organization membership and accession to the International Organisation of Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN) Economic Community.

WHO supported the assessment of the national food control system in Timor-Leste and the objectives of the World Food Safety Day workshop were to reinforce policy advocacy to the government of Timor-Leste, to strengthen the national food control system and familiarize attendees with the importance of Codex in promoting fair practices in the food trade and protecting consumer health.
