World Food Safety Day/ A Food Loss and Waste Podcast

15/07/2024

The United States of America Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Kitchen Sink: A Food Loss and Waste Podcast celebrated World Food Safety Day this year with a special episode on food safety. The host and producer, Nika Larian, USAID Senior Nutrition Advisor for Food Safety, was joined by three experts, Richard Pluke, the Food Safety Lead and Chief of Party for the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) EatSafe project; Roberta Lauretti-Bernhard, Vice President for Programs at Food Enterprise Solutions and Angela Mulaisho, Chief of Party at the Alliance for Inclusive and Nutritious Food Processing (AINFP).

The speakers reflected on the intersections between food safety and food loss and waste, including how food processing can reduce food loss and waste and how improved food business capacities can provide consumers with access to safer and more nutritious foods. The podcast discussed food safety in traditional markets, a key space in food systems for low- and middle-income countries, and highlighted GAIN’s EatSafe, a programme aiming to enable lasting improvements in the safety of nutritious foods in traditional markets by focusing on behaviour change, guiding how to change behaviours around food safety and markets and how improving food safety in traditional markets can reduce food waste.

USAID Kitchen Sink Food Loss and Waste Podcast shares monthly, bite-sized episodes that highlight the approaches to address food loss and waste.
