World Food Safety Day celebrations in Nepal

07/06/2024

The World Food Safety Day 2024 event kicked off in Kathmandu today with an interactive programme on food safety emergency preparedness and response which was supported by the Codex Trust Fund project in Nepal through WHO. The theme of the World Food Safety Day is ‘Food safety: prepare for the unexpected’ in order to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks of biological, chemical and radionuclear origin.

The main objective of the interaction programme was to advocate and sensitize about the FAO/WHO International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) and the importance of food safety emergency preparedness and response plan to mitigate the public health and socioeconomic impact of food safety emergencies.

Dr Gyanendra Gongal from WHO’s South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) delivered a keynote address highlighting the role of Codex and INFOSAN in food safety emergency preparedness and response in line with International health regulations (2005). Food safety is a shared responsibility and government, food business operators and consumers have an important role to play together in preventing food safety emergency. This event was an opportunity to disseminate the recently enacted Food Safety and Quality Act, BS 2081 (2024) to national stakeholders.
