Codex Trust Fund / Conference concludes successful project in Kazakhstan
The conference “Codex Alimentarius. Results, lessons learned, successes” concluded a project, funded by the Codex Trust Fund (CTF), aimed at establishing an effective National Codex Committee (NCC) in Kazakhstan. The conference, attended by government officials and representatives of international organizations including FAO, WHO and WOAH, provided an update on current and emerging food safety issues in Kazakhstan and discussed joint approaches to improving the safety and quality of life of the population.
Dr. Jeronimas Maskeliunas, WHO, presented the results of the CTF project noting that all activities had been completed as scheduled. Among these activities, Dr Maskeliunas mentioned the establishment of the Codex Contact Point and of the Interagency Coordination Council, and the development of a national Codex Alimentarius webpage. Other activities of the project included: the creation of a national pool of food safety experts, the development of national guidelines on Codex Alimentarius, and the organization of several workshops for Codex stakeholders in the country.
During the conference, national experts informed participants about food safety issues in the country and shared experience in using and implementing Codex standards. Participants also stressed the importance of further running in-person workshops and strengthening collaboration between the members of the Interagency Coordination Council.
