World Food Safety Day/ Singapore food safety hub hosts international discussion

22/08/2024

On 7 June, World Food Safety Day, the Future Ready Food Safety Hub (FRESH) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore held a virtual panel discussion titled “Global Perspectives on anticipating and managing food safety risks.”

The discussion addressed several critical areas related to foodborne disease risks: the impact of climate change, pandemics, and geopolitical tensions on global food safety; the importance of future-ready risk assessment using advanced technologies; the role of science and technology in enhancing food safety control; the need for global strategies and collaborative actions; and the significance of a One Health approach and multisector collaboration, as well as flexible national food safety systems to ensure resilience against emerging threats.

“This year's theme resonates deeply within the global food safety community, as it underscores the critical need to be vigilant and adaptive to food safety threats in an ever-changing global food systems landscape,” said FRESH Director, Professor William Chen, continuing: “FRESH plays an important role in advancing food safety through building technology platforms for risk assessment of novel foods and beyond and collaborative efforts in Singapore and globally.”

Contributors to the event panel included leading food safety experts from around the world who came together to discuss the theme "Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected." These included Dr Simone Moraes Raszl of the World Health Organization (WHO), Prof. Chris Elliott from Queen's University Belfast, Prof. Wu Yongning from China’s National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, Prof. Dr Samim Saner from Gıda Güvenliği Derneği, the Turkish Food Safety Association, and Associate Prof. Joanne Sheot Harn Chan from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

Nearly 100 participants from different regions of the world attended the event.
