FAO Writeshop: “Empowering small-scale livestock producers through the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach”

28/02/2017 02/03/2017

The many successful experiences in applying the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach to livestock production have raised interest among Governments, NGOs, the private sector and other stakeholders to design new livestock-focused field school interventions. However, there is a lack of information as to how to successfully design, implement, replicate and scale-up livestock-focused field school activities. To contribute to filling this gap, FAO's Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) will hold a three-day writeshop in Machakos (Kenya) at the end of February entitled “Empowering small-scale livestock producers through the FFS approach”. The writeshop will bring together about 10 professionals with extensive field experience on FFS, Livestock Farmer Field Schools (LFFS), Agro-Pastoral Field Schools (APFS), and Pastoral Field Schools (PFS) with the aim of achieving the following objectives:

  1. To improve and finalize the AGA draft guidelines “Using the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach to empower small-scale livestock producers - Decision tools for development practitioners” (provisional title).
  2. To identify the major needs, priorities and opportunities to strengthen FAO’s support to small-scale livestock producers through the FFS approach.
