Flathead grey mullet - Feeding methods

Larvae
Rotifers and phytoplankton can be given manually, every day especially in the morning.  In order to keep the proper densities previously given, water exchanges must be systematically compensated by providing more live food to the larval tank accordingly.

An automatic delivery system can be used and will result in more constant rotifers and phytoplankton densities through the day period. Artemia nauplii are usually given manually 2 to 4 times daily and may be adjusted according to the larvae demand. Pelleted feeds can be distributed with automatic feeder such as clockwork-driven belt feeders.

Adults
The best growth with low FCR are obtained while scattering the feed on the water surface (Ghion, 1986). Hand feeding is the often practiced but automatic systems such as blower feeder may be used for larger ponds. However, the technical solutions implemented also depend on the species cultured with the flathead grey mullet. In cage farming systems, the feed can be placed onto a feeding tray suspended in the cage (Essa, 1996). Feeding table for mullet using formulated feed is given in Table 13.
