Silver carp - Feed formulation

Live food
Silver carp larvae are reared in fertilized ponds that have a well established zooplankton community. Grass is normally used to fertilize larval ponds at 300–6 000 kg/ha five–ten days before stocking, although oilseed cake as well as animal manure and grass silage is also used to fertilize larval rearing ponds. (Liu and He, 1992).

Formulated feeds
There are no formulated feeds for silver carp. As mentioned above the species is used in polyculture systems and feeds on phytoplankton, detritus and waste feed and contributes towards water quality maintenance. Silver carp have been used in many eutrophic lakes to control algae blooms. The species is ideally suited for this purpose since it has a high resistance to microcystines (Domaizon and Devaux, 1999; Ghosh et al., 1999; Xie, 2003).
