| DEFINITION OF MARINE POLLUTION |
| Pollution of the marine environment means: “The introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances or energy into the marine environment (including estuaries) which results in such deleterious effects as harm to living resources, hazards to human health, hindrance to marine activities including fishing, impairment of quality for use of sea water and reduction of amenities”. |

| ABSTRACT |
| This document is the final report of the first session of the CIFA Working Party on Pollution and Fisheries, held in Accra, Ghana, 16–20 June 1986. The Working Party reviewed reports on the state of pollution of African inland waters and existing pollution monitoring and research programmes, and made proposals for the preparation of study papers, for research projects on biological and chemical monitoring of water contaminants and on comparative toxicity of pollutants to African freshwater fish. It further proposed a sub-regional project on pollution in Lake Tanganyika and a seminar on aquatic pollution management. A paper on Scientific Bases for Pollution Control in African Inland Waters, finalized by the Working Party, is annexed to this report. |
