The 1999 Africa Regional Aquaculture review (CIFA OP24) concluded that the promotion and facilitation of the private-sector production of feed and seed is one of the key issues for aquaculture in Africa to advance further. Aquaculture technology should not be based on imported commodities (e.g. hormones, feeds, etc) but rather build on existing local resources. At the same time, there is a strong need for information exchange throughout the region, in research, development, training and extension.
In an effort to address these issues, the Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service, through the Fisheries Department Group of the FAO Regional Office for Africa, contracted Dr T. Hecht of Rhodes University, South Africa, to facilitate and organize the preparation of five country reviews (South Africa, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya and Zambia) and one regional synthesis paper on the animal and aquafeed industry in sub-Saharan Africa.
