In 1973 FAO published “A Bibliography of African Freshwater Fish”, prepared by H. Matthes. This compilation included all references to African Freshwater Fishery Science up to 1968 with the exception of papers dealing with economics and/or fishery statistics, processing, agricultural aspects, biographies, and all pre-Linnaen publications. Also excluded were publications relating to introduced or native species outside the African continent.
Since 1968 numerous other publications have appeared dealing with the fish and fisheries of African Inland waters and the present document assembles those references which have appeared up to October 1975. For consistency, the indexes used correspond to those of the original bibliography:
a subject index, in which each citation appears under as many concepts as are relevant;
a geographic index based on land and inland water areas;
a zoogeographic area index, essentially by river basins;
a taxonomic index, based on Berg's (1940) classification for orders and sub-orders, but on Greenwood's (1966) classification for families.
