This genus is found in lakes, streams, rivers, swamps and floodplains, many of which are subject to seasonal drying. Though not as widespread as other Clarias species, (e.g. C. gariepinus or C. batrachus) nevertheless C. fuscus is an important aquaculture species that can be grown in ponds, cages, tanks and raceways, and integrated systems.
