Through improvements to the post-harvesting handling and processing, such as better drying and storing conditions and processing into ready-to-eat foods, cosmetics and specialty products, the farming community is able to add value to the business venture. Kappaphycus alvarezii is an important aquatic product and its farming and processing offers a livelihood generating activity, often being conducted by farming cooperatives - and reduces the pressure on wild harvest. FAO support has been provided under several projects to improve production techniques, adapt to climate change, and work towards strengthening the value chain.
