Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST) Partnership

Attributing extreme weather events and agricultural losses and damages to climate change

Virtual Event, 10/06/2024

As Parties reached a historic agreement on the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund at the COP28, there is an increasing attention to climate attribution science. Attribution science can be used to demonstrate the degree to which anthropogenic climate change is increasing the occurrence of anomalies in agricultural productivity such as crop yield. Investigating how climate change is driving disaster risk in agrifood systems is essential for understanding how agrifood systems have been and will be impacted. Improved understanding will also support formulating climate and agricultural policies, programmes, projects, and financial mechanisms necessary to strengthen the resilience of agrifood systems. In this climate change study circle session, Dr Yukiko Imada (University of Tokyo), together with Dr Sabine Undorf and Dr Christoph Gornott (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), will discuss the role of climate attribution science in assessing agricultural losses and damages, after a brief introduction by Dr Hideki Kanamaru (Natural Resources Officer, OCB).
