A world without safe food is an unsafe world

World Food Safety Day - 7 JUNE 2026

Foodborne diseases affect everyone, everywhere, and reliable data on their burden is essential to understand risks and inform action. But data is only the starting point. At FAO, we help turn knowledge into action by supporting countries with practical tools, science-based guidance and capacity development to strengthen agrifood systems. From improving practices along the food chain to enabling risk-based policies, FAO works with partners to deliver solutions that make food safer for all. The 2026 joint FAO and WHO World Food Safety Day campaign launched today revealing this year's theme: “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere”.

Food safety – ensuring access to food that is safe to eat – is essential in advancing health, livelihoods, trade, economic growth and overall prosperity. To support Members in providing safe food for all, FAO has developed four strategic outcomes with corresponding strategic actions, in line with FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022-31 and described in the Food Safety Strategic Priorities.

Strategic outcomes

The pursuit of these strategic outcomes is an integral part of building sustainable and inclusive agrifood systems, food security, nutrition and healthy diets. It is a requirement for market access and food trade as well as agricultural development strategies. The four strategic outcomes are:

 Join the conversation
I. Intergovernmental and multistakeholder engagement in intersectoral coordination of food safety governance is reinforced at all levels
II. Sound scientific advice and evidence are provided as the foundation for food safety decision making
III. National food control systems are further strengthened and are continuously improved
IV. Public and private stakeholder collaboration is promoted to ensure food safety management and controls throughout agrifood systems

These strategic outcomes are designed to work together to create a cohesive approach to food safety, supporting FAO's food‑safety vision to “ensure safe food for all people at all times”, and its food safety mission “to support Members in continuing to improve food safety at all levels by providing scientific advice and strengthening their food safety capacities for more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems”.

Partnerships

FAO acknowledges that eradicating hunger, malnutrition and poverty is a fight that can only be won by joining forces with different stakeholders. The FAO Food Safety and Quality Unit works in close collaboration with other UN agencies, national and international organizations, research centres and professional associations on food safety, quality and nutrition to provide scientific advices, to develop international food standards, to network and share knowledge especially during emergencies, to implement international sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards, to build capacities in developing and adopting nuclear techniques, and to tackle food safety issues along the food chain.
