World Food Safety Day 2022 report released in six languages

26/10/2022

The report on the observance of World Food Safety Day 2022 has now been released in all six official UN languages with the title “World Food Safety Day 2022 in pictures and numbers”, offering an overview of this year’s events. Observances were held in at least 109 countries for the fourth annual World Food Safety Day.

Events included webinars and conferences and a wide variety of awareness-raising activities such as quizzes, tasting sessions with food safety tips, sports events and oratory competitions, as well as food safety surveys and media presentations. Notably, there were many school activities organized in different parts of the world, with young people engaging with WHO’s Five Keys to Safer Food and creating their own food safety videos and, in a school in Colombia, children were invited to inspect their canteen staff for compliance with good hygiene practices. Many food businesses, from the small to global household names, found ways to reinforce food safety training with staff and food safety professionals and academics debated various issues around this year’s theme “Safer food, better health”.

World Food Safety Day 2022 was a key date for decision-makers to announce new food safety initiatives and policies. At a regional level, the African Union chose World Food Safety Day to announce its region-wide food safety policy. Different national-level initiatives were announced in Ghana, for example, where the Food and Drug Administration launched its National Food Safety Policy; in Luxembourg, where the Chamber of Commerce unveiled its updated food hygiene guidance to restaurants; in Qatar with the establishment of a National Initiative of Nutrition, Food, and Food Safety (NINFFS); and in Yemen, where the Yemeni Organization for Standardization, Metrology and Quality Control launched its National Strategic Food Safety Project.

The World Food Safety Day report includes some key statistics about engagement with the Day, which show, amongst other data, that exposure of the World Food Safety Day hashtag on Twitter has almost tripled since last year. This and some photos of events from around the world offer just a taster of a celebration that has grown every year since it was established.
