Background

The complexity of the agrifood system requires a shift towards the application of systems thinking and tools for better governance and policymaking. This approach gained momentum during the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit, which inspired over 120 countries to develop National Transformational Pathways, reflecting the need to address challenges systemically across sectors, policies, stakeholders, and sustainability dimensions.

Collaboration with IIPP includes the development of systems tools that improve the design and implementation of agrifood systems policies. In addition to a forthcoming training package for policymakers on systems tools, this collaboration also involves research conducted by Master of Public Administration students on policy coherence. The seminar will feature:

  • Presentations by IIPP students on their findings from Ireland, Philippines, South Africa and Uganda, looking at the practical experiences, challenges, and successes policymakers encounterin striving to achieve more coherent policy frameworks.
  • A presentation by Dr. Rainer Kattel, Professor of Innovation and Public Governance and Deputy Director at UCL IIPP. Dr. Kattel will share state-of-the-art insights on adopting a systems approach to policymaking, lessons from the application of an FAO-IIPP training to policymakers on the topic, and next steps to address knowledge gaps in this area.
