Summary:

Nepal, a small Himalayan country, is located between latitude 26o22' and 30o27' north and longitude 80o40' and 88o12' east, with area of 147,181 km2 and population of 26.6 million (growth rate 1.4%). Climatically, Nepal lies in the temperate zone with an added advantage of altitude from 90 to 8848 m. Geographically, Nepal is divided into three regions i.e., northern mountain, mid hill, and southern terai. The diversified agro-climatic conditions of Nepal have provided the country with huge potential to grow different agricultural crops. Government of Nepal has developed National Biosafety Framework in 2006. It has provision the policy framework and related authorities regarding national biosafety including GM Foods. Nepal has to build the capacity to monitor the GM Foods and its trade.
